Today we’d like to introduce you to Vincent McCauley Jr.
Vincent, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Level One Sites started in 2012 as a partnership between myself and Scott Martin. We focused primarily on golf course websites, social networks and a golf course review website. After my wife got involved with a local CrossFit gym, we were asked to make a website for the local gym (called a box). After making that first site, we were immediately (within a few weeks) inundated with site build requests, a meeting a Reebok HQ in Canton and even contacted by CrossFit HQ to make sure we were staying trademark compliant.
After some explosive growth, hiring, moving offices, my partner Scott asked to be bought out and go a different direction. At this point, Justin and Albert Neumaier, joined the company to assist in the restructuring of the business and some required additional investments. This transition in the company was significant because it allowed us to pursue new technology solutions, open up a devoted office in India and expand our capabilities dramatically. We’ve been able to work with over 650 small companies in 23 different countries. We’ve added new franchises to our business model, participated in equity sharing arrangements with local startups, and assist other companies become more profitable by helping them set up operations off shore as well.
CrossFit Affiliates still account for about 80% of our client portfolio. We’ve been able to work with CrossFit Games Champion – Jason Khalipa, as well as work with Twitter on their Fitter Twitter campaign to bring fitness into the Twitter HQ offices in California. So although we specialize in small to medium sized business websites and technology solutions, we’ve also had the opportunity to work with some Fortune 100 companies.
It’s really been an amazing ride so far and the future continues to look bright.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say the road has been smooth. Through the midst of growth and corporate restructuring, I was blessed to have my first child, second child and a terminal illness diagnosis for my father … so smooth isn’t a word I’d would have used. Reacting to growth, while being primarily a bootstrapped/self-funded business certainly comes with some challenges. That being said, there is nothing that we were faced with that couldn’t be overcome with hard work, determination and a support system. I’m fortunate to have an amazingly supportive wife, friends and family.
The restructuring of the business was probably the most significant challenge we dealt with as we needed to get attorneys involved and the future was unclear.
It took us about a year to source a devoted and talented team in India, and once we did, we financed their operation so we had a devoted team working with and for us. We lovingly explain the process as “we had to kiss a lot of frogs, before we found a prince.” We don’t outsource any of our work to an outside company, the team we work with in India solely work with Level One Sites and it’s created a win win for our stateside office and our team in India.
Not having enough work is a problem that some companies face with regularly. We have a problem on the other side of the pendulum, we’ve consistently had to react on the fly to either too much work, or growth coming at us quickly. If I were to pick a problem that I prefer, it’s definitely having too much work though.
Please tell us about Level One Sites.
Level One Sites primarily makes websites for small to medium sized businesses. We also provide custom coded solutions, assist with off shoring activities and provide technology consulting for clients that require it. One of my favorite aspects that we cater to is small tech startups. I enjoy the consultative process of helping a client take their vision and making it into a fully functional reality. I enjoy business and discussing business, so one of the soft values we bring to our clients is assisting them in cost effective marketing solutions at launch, as well as we provide ongoing support and hosting. We have a fully staffed support desk that operations Monday through Friday, about 20 hours a day.
One of our specialties is providing startups with a MVP product to launch and market test with. Before our clients invest heavily in their vision, we can typically make them a MVP (minimum viable product) to use to test the market, soft launch and really test the waters before making a larger commitment. I don’t know any other company that is providing that on a consistent level.
We recently had the opportunity to work with and help launch, ButcherBox.com which has been doing amazingly well and become a local Boston award winning start up.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
At 18 years old, I had the opportunity to buy a landscaping company that was for sale. I would work it in the summers during college break as my main source of employment while in college. I asked my father for permission to buy the business (and use the family truck and barn) and he gave me his support, with one stipulation. I could do it, as long as I did it completely by the book, paid my taxes and did it right. He didn’t want me working for cash on the side. Taking his instruction seriously, I would estimate jobs dressed well, carry a briefcase, pay my taxes, hire staff and run a successful operation.
I’ve since owned a restaurant, a hair salon, a clothing start up and some internet projects, and being a small business owner (who “did it right”) provided some of the best experience in my career now. I often think back to the wisdom my father had in supporting me, but directing me to make it a corporation and help support this awesome country that has provided us so much.
